How The World Cup is Exposing Millions to the Gospel Despite Russia's Evangelism Ban

Russia kicked off the World Cup Thursday, the beginning of a month-long spectacle where millions of fans tune in to watch the world's best soccer teams battle to be number one.

For many Christians this isn't just a sporting event, it's an opportunity to spread the gospel in a country that has become increasingly hostile towards evangelism.

Thousands of congregations across Moscow, St. Petersburg, and other cities are skirting around Russia's anti-evangelism laws by inviting people to watch the games live in their church buildings.

There, people will get to watch the games on a big screen, eat snacks, and encounter God's word.

Since most of the popular matches are sold out, the setup is a win-win for both the churches and the spectators.

The churches have partnered with Mission Eurasia to pass out Bibles, discipleship materials, and invitations to Bible studies.

"Mission Eurasia is capitalizing on mobilizing and training, equipping the next generation of leaders in all the countries of the former Soviet Union," Mission Eurasia president Sergey Rakhuba told CBN News. "But especially focusing on this unprecedented opportunity that this World Cup games represent."

"We want these young leaders that we've trained that have so much energy, full of enthusiasm, sharing their faith, sharing Scripture with people in the community," he continued.

Rakhuba believes 3 million soccer fans will hear the gospel, despite the government's crackdown on evangelism.

"They don't allow believers outside of their churches to share their faith," Rakhuba explained. "That's why this strategy around the World Cup games is involved so that people will be invited to their officially registered church buildings where they will have their events, where they are allowed to have outreach, and there where we'll be able to share the Gospel with them."

North Korea Airs Video of Historic Summit, Refers to President Trump as 'Supreme Leader'

North Korea aired the historic face-to-face meeting between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un across state media Thursday, painting the US commander in chief in a new light.

It took two days after the summit's conclusion for the rogue regime to air video and pictures from the meeting.

Trump is now being called "the president of the United States of America," "President Donald J. Trump" or "supreme leader," which is a major change from being referred to as "dotard" last year.

Kim was clearly the star of the 42-minute program as his handshake with Trump didn't appear until 20 minutes in.

The post-summit transformation comes in the wake of children in North Korea being taught to distrust and even hate "American imperialists."

This shift signals a new era in the regime's relationship with the United States after Trump and Kim signed a document aimed at building a lasting, stable peace.

"Chairman Kim has the chance to seize an incredible future for his people. Anyone can make war – only the most courageous can make peace," Trump said upon signing the accord.

The key phrase in the agreement is that in exchange for security guarantees, Kim reaffirms his commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

"The world will see a major change," Kim vowed. "I would like to express my gratitude to President Trump."

The North Korean people have limited access to other news sources so the state media's portrayal of Trump and the summit is incredibly important.

Nata Sharibu, whose daughter was kidnapped from her Nigerian school last month, wishes his daughter was home, but He is proud of her defiance towards her captors by refusing to denounce her faith.

"Boko Haram insurgents decided not to release my daughter because she refused to denounce Christ,” Sharibu told reporters today. “I am happy for that, even though as a father I wish she had returned home as the rest. But God is in control,” ABC News reported.

Monday, February 19, Boko Haram militants invaded a girl’s boarding school in northeastern Nigeria and kidnapped 110 girls. After making a deal with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, the militant group released at least 105 schoolgirls and 1 boy Wednesday, March 21. The one girl who was not released is a 15-year-old Christian who refused to convert to Islam. 

“One girl, Liya, is still with them because she is a Christian,” said Khadija Grema, one of the abducted girls who was returned to her family on Wednesday, as reported by The PUNCH.

The PUNCH also reported on Greme’s eyewitness account:

“They fed us very well, they treated us very well. They did not beat us; they did not molest us," Grema said.

She also said that her experience in the hands of the insurgents was a sad one. The five girls are reported to have died from suffocation during the kidnapping. 

ABC News reported, “One of the freed schoolgirls, Fatsuma Abdullahi, said five of her classmates at the Government Girls Science Technical College in Dapchi died while the kidnappers herded them into vehicles.”

“After reuniting with their families in Dapchi, the students were taken to a nearby general hospital where they received medical attention and psychosocial support, [President] Mohammed [Buhari] said.”

President Buhari released a statement that said, ‘’For the release to work, the government had a clear understanding that violence and confrontation would not be the way out as it could endanger the lives of the girls; hence, a non-violent approach was the preferred option,” The PUNCH reported.

Since this attack on Government Girls Science Technical College in Dapchi, two northeastern states, Yobe and Borno have closed every boarding school in fear of other kidnapping raids. The Arabic name, Boko Haram, means “Western education is forbidden.” As ChristianHeadlines.com reported yesterday, “Giving in to the group’s goals will only further incite them to continue their attacks and abductions.”

BISHOP DONATES A KIDNEY TO SAVE THE LIFE OF A HINDU MAN

CATHOLIC BISHOP JACOB MURICKEN WILL DONATE HIS KIDNEY TO HELP A MAN WITH KIDNEY FAILURE. A bishop in India is leading by example during the Year of Mercy with an act of great generosity. Syro-Malabar Catholic bishop Jacob Muricken is donating his kidney to save the life of a young Hindu man, reports the Catholic News Agency.

Bishop Donating His Kidney to Save the Life of a Hindu Man

Bishop Muricken, 52-years-old and from the state of Kerala in southern India, says he has “no anxiety” about the surgery and that “it’s only a simple sacrifice for a fellow being.” Sooraj Sudhakaran is the 30-year-old who will receive the kidney. He is from Kottakkal, which is also in Kerala. Sudhakaran supports his wife and mother as his father died four years ago and his brother two years ago. He recently lost his job and sold his house to pay for dialysis treatment. He was diagnosed with kidney failure two years ago. Bishop Muricken is also helping to pay for some of the costs of the procedure, something else Sudhakaran is thankful for, in addition to, of course, a working kidney. Upon finding out that he would be receiving a kidney, he said, “it’s nothing less than God’s intervention.” While Bishop Murichen’s sacrifice is great, the idea is not originally his. In fact, he was inspired by the actions of Fr. Davis Chiramel, founder of the Kidney Federation of India, an organization which has arranged for more than 20 religious men and women to donate healthy kidneys to needy recipients. Fr. Chiramel donated his kidney seven years ago. In addition to saving and improving lives, the Kidney Federation of India also hopes to break down taboos against organ donation in the country. One of the stipulations of the organ donation is that somebody in the recipient’s family must be willing to donate in the future as well, if at all possible. Nobody in Sudhakaran’s family will be able to donate in the future, but the Federation is waiving the clause in this case.
